Designing Tomorrow: A Sustainable Township for DVC at Raghunathpur

Project Facts

AED is proud to be the Architectural and Engineering Design Consultant for the Integrated Township under Raghunathpur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) Phase-II, a landmark initiative of Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) being executed by NBCC (India) Ltd. This township has been envisioned as a self-sufficient, future-ready community that will support the operational and residential needs of DVC personnel while setting new benchmarks in sustainable and inclusive development.

The project aims to create a modern residential and institutional campus that balances operational efficiency with high-quality living. Designed with a climate-responsive approach, the master plan emphasizes natural ventilation, passive cooling, and building orientation aligned with sun path and wind directions. Every element, from the layout of residential crescents and institutional clusters to the integration of service zones, has been carefully planned to ensure functionality, safety, and comfort.

Sustainability lies at the core of this township. The design targets a 3-Star Green Building rating and incorporates strategies such as rainwater harvesting, on-site wastewater treatment, rooftop solar readiness, low-flow fixtures, and waste-to-compost loops. More than thirty percent of the site has been reserved as landscaped greens, with shaded pathways, bioswales, and community play areas ensuring a healthy microclimate. The township’s infrastructure is also future-proof, with provisions for EV-ready parking, renewable integration, and resilient stormwater management systems.

The master plan fosters a strong sense of community by integrating residential clusters with civic and recreational amenities. Residents will benefit from a modern clubhouse, playgrounds, sports courts, and children’s parks, all within walking distance. A school up to Class XII, a town administration block, and dedicated service yards further reinforce the township’s self-sufficiency. Each neighbourhood is anchored around central green courts, ensuring that no dwelling is more than 150 meters away from a recreational space.

Strategically located near Raghunathpur in West Bengal’s Purulia district, the township enjoys seamless connectivity. It lies just six kilometres from Raghunathpur town and adjacent to the RTPS plant, with direct road links to NH-32 and NH-19, convenient access to Anara and Adra railway stations, and air connectivity via Durgapur and Kolkata. This connectivity not only strengthens its operational viability but also places the township at the heart of a fast-developing industrial-energy corridor.

Through this project, AED is delivering more than infrastructure—it is creating a resilient, people-centric environment that harmonises industrial growth with ecological sensitivity. The Raghunathpur Integrated Township reflects our philosophy of “Design. Detail. Inspire.” and stands as a model of sustainable urban growth in India’s power sector.
