ARCH-EN DESIGN has been associated with the development of multiple academic and residential facilities within the prestigious campus of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur). The projects undertaken form part of the institute’s continuous expansion and modernization program aimed at strengthening both academic infrastructure and residential facilities for students and faculty. Through these projects, the design approach focused on integrating new buildings harmoniously within the established architectural language of the campus while responding to evolving functional and environmental requirements.

The scope of work included the design and development of several important institutional and residential buildings across the campus. These include the Research Associates Hostel, the 800-Seater Girls Hostel (Phase I and Phase II), multiple Faculty Residential Buildings (Type-2, Type-3, and Type-4), and the Lecture Hall Complex, which is currently under development. Together, these facilities contribute to creating a comprehensive academic ecosystem that supports student life, faculty housing, and academic interaction within the IIT Kanpur campus.

The residential facilities for faculty were planned to provide comfortable and ready-to-move-in accommodation for visiting and resident faculty members of the institute. The planning carefully addressed the spatial needs of academic professionals while ensuring that the built environment blends seamlessly with the surrounding campus context. The buildings were designed to maintain visual continuity with the architectural character of IIT Kanpur, particularly the use of exposed brickwork and restrained material palettes that define the campus identity.

The faculty residential blocks were organized on a triangular parcel of land, with particular emphasis placed on environmental sensitivity and energy-efficient design strategies. The design incorporated several passive and sustainable features, including cavity wall construction for improved thermal insulation, the use of eco-friendly materials for doors and windows, solar-control glass, and roof treatments such as brick coba and broken china mosaic tiles to reduce solar heat gain. Additionally, dense plantation along the western and southern edges of the site was introduced to provide natural shading and reduce heat exposure, while rainwater harvesting systems were integrated as part of the campus-wide sustainability strategy.

In keeping with the established architectural vocabulary of the institute, the buildings utilize exposed brick façades combined with selective concrete and plastered surfaces, ensuring visual harmony with the existing campus structures. The residential blocks were conceived as horizontally spread double-storey structures, carefully scaled to maintain the human-scale character of the residential precinct. The planning also ensures strong physical connectivity with the existing Research Associates Hostel Block located to the north, allowing the development to function as a cohesive residential cluster within the larger campus framework.

Through these projects, ARCH-EN DESIGN contributed to enhancing the academic and residential infrastructure of IIT Kanpur while maintaining sensitivity to campus context, environmental performance, and the long-standing architectural character of one of India’s premier technical institutions.
