Homes for the judges, judicial officers and staff of the High Court of Chhattisgarh at Bilaspur: bungalows and residences in nine types, set in a landscaped 60-acre campus.

About the project

When Chhattisgarh became a state in 2000, its new High Court at Bilaspur needed a campus and homes for the people who serve it. ARCH-EN DESIGN planned the residential complex on about 60 acres, and the work was completed in 2007.

A residence for every rank

The houses follow the hierarchy of the court in nine types. The Chief Justice and the Justices have their own bungalows; senior judicial officers live in Type B bungalows; senior officers, junior officers and senior staff have residences of Types D to G and I, and the staff Type H.

The houses share one language of pitched tiled roofs, deep verandahs, arched openings and balconies, in warm ochre and cream, so that the complex reads as one neighbourhood however large or small each house.

A campus around green

The site plan threads the houses along curving roads around open lawns and a central ground, keeping the bungalows of the judges apart from the denser staff housing.
