Ar. Ashok Kumar
Founder & President
As founder and President, Ashok Kumar sets the direction of the practice. His conviction is that the most sustainable building is the one that needs the least to run: orientation, shade, thermal mass and water are settled in the first sketch, long before any rating is sought. That thinking runs through four decades of work, from the brick residences of the IIT Kanpur Campus to the GRIHA 5-star Income Tax Office in Bhopal, recognised with GRIHA Exemplary Performance Awards three years running.
He founded ARCH-EN DESIGN in 1984, a year after graduating from IIT Roorkee with two gold medals, for the best overall performance and the best thesis. Under his leadership the practice has designed more than 30 Medical Colleges and some of India's largest public Hospitals, among them the 2,200-bed King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam and the 850-bed Command Hospital at Udhampur. He serves on the Syndicate of IIT Roorkee, appointed by the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, and received the Masterstroke Award in 2024.
