A station for the pilgrim town of Govardhan in Braj, with a sandstone front of cusped arches, carved columns and domed chhatris to greet visitors who come for the parikrama of Govardhan Hill.
About the project
Govardhan, about 22 kilometres from Mathura, is one of the most visited pilgrim towns of Braj, and many of its visitors arrive by train.
In March 2023 the Agra Division of North Central Railway appointed ARCH-EN DESIGN as architectural and technical consultant for six of its stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme: Kosi Kalan, Hodal, Bhuteshwar, Govardhan, Deeg and Govindgarh. For each, the work covers the feasibility study, master planning, urban design and engineering, and the technical feasibility report, detailed estimate and BOQ tender schedule for Phase I.
A temple town’s front door
The station building is drawn in the language of the temples and havelis of Braj: a long arcade of cusped arches on carved columns, a scalloped parapet, and domed chhatris over the entrance and at the corners. A landscaped forecourt with a circulating road lets cars, taxis and autos drop passengers at the door.
Along the line
Around the building, the station area is reorganised along the tracks, with shelters over the platforms, a footbridge, shaded parking and planting on both sides of the line.
