A design proposal for a palaeontological park at Bagh, Dhar, where dinosaur eggs, bones and fossil wood lie in the ground, planned as a walk through geological time that touches the fragile site as lightly as possible.

About the project

The Dinosaur Fossil National Park at Bagh, in Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh, covers about 89 hectares. Its ground holds dinosaur eggs, bones and fossilised wood from the Mesozoic era. Our design proposal treats the park as a place for palaeontology, conservation, learning and eco-tourism, while protecting a landscape that is easily damaged.

A walk through time

The plan is built around the visitor's journey. It begins at an entrance complex. From there, interpretive paths lead out across the fossil zones, through 'time-travel tunnels', into interactive learning galleries and past fossil displays kept under protection. The landscape itself becomes the Museum: an open-air one, where visitors, researchers and students can follow the story of the Earth's prehistoric past on the ground where it was found.

Treading lightly

Conservation shaped every part of the proposal. It calls for eco-sensitive construction, controlled visitor movement, protective structures over the fossils and renewable energy, so that the site can receive visitors with as little impact on the ground as possible.

For us, the project was a chance to explore how Architecture and landscape can reveal the deep history held in the land, and let people walk across it with care.
