The Headquarters of the Uttar Pradesh Prisons department in Lucknow, a symmetrical office building of red panels and white surfaces, entered through a recessed central volume and set in planting.

About the project

The Uttar Pradesh Prisons Headquarters in Lucknow is the central office of Prisons Administration & Reform Services. It stands on a site of about 5 acres and was completed in 2017.

Clear zones inside

The plan separates administrative offices, meeting spaces and support functions into clear zones. This keeps work flowing and movement simple, while allowing the control a Headquarters of this kind needs. The layout is also planned to adapt over time.

Red panels, white walls

The elevations are disciplined and modern, built on a balance of solid and void. Bold red façade panels stand against clean white surfaces. Recessed windows and framed openings give the walls depth and rhythm, and vertical glazing brings daylight inside while stressing the building's height. Proportion and symmetry give it the formal character of a state Headquarters.

The central entrance is marked by a recessed volume with a slight projection, a threshold that is welcoming and formal at once. Ornament is kept to a minimum, which also keeps maintenance low.

Softened by planting

Green buffers, tree-lined edges and planting in the foreground soften the built form, give the grounds a calm order and improve comfort around the building.
