A super-speciality Hospital and postgraduate institute for SAIL on the Ispat General Hospital Campus at Rourkela, arranged around courtyards so that daylight and air reach every room, and built as a steel building.

About the project

The Apollo Ispat Post Graduate Institute and Super Speciality Hospital adds specialist treatment to an established Hospital. It was initiated by the Ministry of Steel for the Steel Authority of India and sits within the existing Ispat General Hospital Campus in Rourkela, so the new departments and the older general Hospital share one site.

Heart, brain and kidney

The Hospital block is planned floor by floor as a heart centre, a brain centre and a kidney centre, taking in cardiology and cardiac surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, and nephrology. Diagnostics, endoscopy, administration and central sterile services support the clinical floors.

  • Four modular operating theatres with pre-operative and post-operative beds
  • A 20-bed central ICU
  • A 10-bed high dependency unit
  • A 10-bed neonatal ICU
  • A 10-bed dialysis unit

Courtyards for light and air

The building is planned around courtyards so that every room receives daylight and natural ventilation. A gateway and an entrance canopy mark the arrival, and services are housed in a block of their own.

A steel building

The structure is composite steel and RCC, built with steel-intensive construction. Steel deck slabs and AAC block walls keep the building light and reduce its carbon footprint, and the facade shows its exposed steel members. Solar panels on the roof reduce the building's demand for electricity. The Hospital is rated GRIHA 4-star and was dedicated to the nation on 21 March 2021.
