A sports complex on about 15 acres in Kankarbagh, Patna, built around a multi-purpose indoor arena whose large-span hall, clear circulation and athlete facilities have hosted international kabaddi and league matches.

About the project

The Patliputra Sports Complex in Kankarbagh, Patna, was planned for training, competition and large public events on a site of about 15 acres. At its heart is the Patliputra Stadium, a multi-purpose indoor arena.

A large-span arena

The arena is built around large-span indoor space, with room for a large crowd of spectators, organised circulation, facilities for athletes and the support spaces that events need. The Planning puts weight on clear movement and easy access for spectators, so that crowds can arrive, find their seats and leave without confusion. The building gives the complex a strong civic presence in the city.

Kabaddi on the world stage

In its early years the Stadium hosted the first Women's World Cup Kabaddi Championship, with teams from 16 countries, a test of how the building handled large audiences, media, athletes and event operations. In 2014 it hosted league matches of the Pro Kabaddi League, with Patna Pirates as the home team. Between major events, the complex is used for training programmes, local tournaments and public gatherings.

ARCH-EN DESIGN was appointed in 1999 for design and supervision, and carried the complex through as a single composite project for the Building Construction Department, Government of Bihar.
