Wayside amenities for travellers on the Gorakhpur Link Expressway, planned as places to stop and rest, with daylit, naturally ventilated buildings and green spaces gathered around fuel, food and rest.

About the project

These wayside amenities, for Bharat Petroleum, serve travellers on the Gorakhpur Link Expressway over a site of about 25 acres, with around 15,000 square metres of buildings. They are planned as more than a quick halt: places where a solo driver, a family on a road trip or someone on a long working drive can stop, rest and set off again refreshed.

What a stop offers

  • hygienic restrooms
  • fuelling stations and EV charging
  • dining
  • recreational zones and child-friendly spaces
  • safe parking
  • first-aid centres

Light, air and green

The buildings are laid out for natural ventilation and generous daylight, with green spaces woven into the plan, so that a break from the road feels like a real break. Locally sourced materials and energy-efficient systems keep the environmental footprint low, and the layouts are planned for travellers with different needs, from a short stop to a longer pause.

A sense of place

Regional art and crafts are worked into the design, giving each stop a sense of the place it serves. Room is also made for small local businesses and vendors, so that a traveller meets something of the region on the way through.
