Apollo ISPAT Post Graduate Institute and a 300 Bedded Super Specialty Hospital
  • 09 April 2026

The ISPAT Super Specialty Hospital at Rourkela, initiated by the Ministry of Steel for the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), represents a significant advancement in regional healthcare infrastructure. Strategically located within the existing ISPAT General Hospital campus, the project is envisioned as a comprehensive, future-ready medical facility catering to advanced and specialized treatment needs. It brings together critical departments such as Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Nephrology, supported by high-end diagnostic systems, endoscopy facilities, and a well-organized administrative and support framework including a centralized sterile services department (CSSD).

The hospital has been meticulously planned with a strong focus on critical care and patient monitoring. It includes a 20-bedded centralized ICU, a 10-bedded High Dependency Unit (HDU), a 10-bedded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and a 10-bedded dialysis unit equipped with a 500-litre RO system and provision for Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT). The surgical infrastructure is equally robust, with a dedicated operation theatre floor comprising four modular OTs, supported by pre-operative and post-operative recovery areas, ensuring efficient clinical workflows and enhanced patient safety.

Architecturally, the building adopts a courtyard-based planning approach, allowing ample natural light and cross-ventilation to penetrate deep into the built form. This not only improves energy efficiency but also creates a more humane and healing environment for patients and healthcare staff. The project utilizes composite steel-intensive construction technology, incorporating steel deck slab systems and AAC block masonry, which significantly reduces the overall structural load and carbon footprint while enabling faster construction.

The façade expresses the structural philosophy of the building through exposed steel elements, reinforcing its identity as a modern steel-intensive healthcare facility. Sustainability is further integrated through solar rooftop installations aimed at reducing energy consumption, and the project is aligned with GRIHA 4-star rating standards. Additionally, a centralized Building Management System (BMS) is incorporated to monitor and control HVAC systems, water supply, lighting, and other critical services, ensuring operational efficiency, reliability, and long-term performance of the facility.

A next-generation super specialty hospital in Rourkela, integrating advanced medical care, steel-intensive architecture, and sustainable design to create a healing environment for the future.
