A district Headquarters at Akbarpur for the new district of Kanpur Dehat, planned on an irregular 400-acre site so that low buildings, plazas and lanes unfold against landscape like a small town.

About the project

When Kanpur Dehat became a district, its Headquarters was planned as a new settlement at Akbarpur, about 60 km from Kanpur on the Kanpur-Jhansi National Highway. The site, about 400 acres, has an unusual shape, with its shorter side on the highway.

Working with the site

Two existing features shaped the plan. An old road branches obliquely off the main road towards the town of Akbarpur. People already used it, and it was the shortest way to a nearby destination, so it was kept and built into the layout. Nearly halfway into the depth of the site runs an irrigation canal, and the roads, buildings and green spaces were arranged to take account of it.

Buildings at a human scale

The project was treated as a piece of Urban Design. Buildings and site Planning were worked out together to give the whole development a human scale. Their size and height are held down, so that they feel close to the ground and the spaces between them take on the atmosphere of busy town streets.

A walk through the Campus

The collectorate keeps its independence but is linked to the other buildings by plazas, lanes and open spaces. For someone on foot, the height and direction of views keep changing, and the buildings appear one after another against a background of dense greenery, set off by newly created landscapes.

The complex was completed for the Government of Uttar Pradesh, with UPRNN as client.
