A University Campus for agricultural and technical studies on 145 acres in Kushinagar, planned on Buddhist ideas of balance and simplicity, with daylit north-south blocks, gardens, water bodies and slow, curving paths.
About the project
Kushinagar is where Gautama Buddha attained Parinirvana, and pilgrims from across the world come to its stupas and historic sites. The Mahatma Buddha Agricultural & Technical University is planned on a 145-acre site beside the Rambhar Stupa. Its design tries to answer to both the needs of a modern Campus and the calm of a place of pilgrimage.
Orientation and zones
The plan draws on Buddhist ideas of balance, mindfulness and simplicity, translated into a few clear decisions. Buildings run north-south to take in daylight and natural ventilation. Academic, residential and recreational zones are each largely self-contained, giving the Campus the feel of a community, something like a sangha. Energy-efficient design and rainwater harvesting support a GRIHA 3-star rating.
Rooms to pause in
The academic blocks are ordered and practical, with open spaces where students can stop, reflect or work together. The Library is naturally ventilated, with generous reading areas. The Auditorium and Hostels are simple and direct, planned for easy access by everyone. Laboratories, farms and botanical gardens serve the University's agricultural teaching and research.
Gardens and curving paths
Between the buildings are gardens, avenue planting and water bodies, with native species and sustainable irrigation. They echo the landscape around the Parinirvana Stupa and the gardens of ancient monasteries. Curved paths wind through the Campus, and local materials and colours help the buildings sit quietly in their setting. Sculptures, murals and meditative spaces are placed along the paths and at the edges of gardens, small reasons for a student to slow down between classes.
