An institute for labour and employment studies in Patna: a three-storey teaching and training building around a courtyard, and a new 258-seat Auditorium beside it, joined by a covered corridor.

About the project

The Dashrath Manjhi Institute of Labour and Employment Studies was built in Patna for the Bihar State Building Construction Corporation. The main building, of about 7,400 m² on a 5-acre site, was designed and built between 2014 and 2017. An Auditorium has since been designed beside it to complete the Campus.

The main building

The main building has three floors arranged around a central open courtyard, with planted roof terraces. Its façades combine white panels and deep window reveals with timber-brown cladding and ochre end walls, and a deep porch marks the entrance from the main road.

The Auditorium

The Auditorium stands in front of the main building, on the road. It seats 258 under a curved roof, in a hall 9 metres high, with a stage of about 9 by 13 metres, a green room, a control room and a VIP lounge, and a meeting room behind. A covered corridor joins it to the main building, so that the two work as one.

The single-storey building, of 1,239 m², was estimated at ₹10.44 crore. It is fitted with acoustic ceiling panels, a timber stage floor, sound reinforcement and air conditioning, and is designed for a GRIHA rating.

The site

A road runs around the two buildings, with parking for 66 cars along the edge. Two sports courts sit beside the Auditorium, and landscaped courts lie between the buildings.
