A new government medical college and hospital at Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, planned for 150 MBBS admissions a year under National Medical Commission norms. The Prime Minister laid its foundation stone in July 2023.
About the project
Jaisalmer is the westernmost district town of Rajasthan, at the edge of the Thar desert. Its new Government Medical College is one of seven that ARCH-EN DESIGN planned for the Government of Rajasthan, at Tonk, Jaisalmer, Sawai Madhopur, Baran, Bundi, Jhunjhunu and Karauli. Each is planned to National Medical Commission norms for 150 MBBS admissions a year, with a teaching hospital, college, hostels and staff housing on one campus and a built-up area of about 48,000 square metres.
The campus
In the desert the plan pulls the buildings close together around green courts and shaded roads, and the academic block, in pink stone with chhatri-topped towers, faces the approach road.
Foundation stone
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, laid the foundation stone on 27 July 2023, together with those of the other new medical colleges in the state.

Why it matters
One of seven new Rajasthan medical colleges, together costing ₹2,275 crore, whose foundation stones the Prime Minister laid at Sikar, bringing medical education to the westernmost district of Rajasthan.
