A master plan to modernise the Government Medical College at Kottayam, Kerala, on a wooded hilltop campus of about 100 acres, with new hospital, teaching, skills and residential blocks.

About the project

The Government Medical College at Kottayam is one of the main teaching hospitals of central Kerala. Its campus of about 100 acres sits on a wooded rise, with the existing hospital and college buildings spread along a loop road. The modernisation, taken up through HLL Infra Tech Services, replans the campus in phases so that the hospital keeps running while new buildings come up around it.

A campus replanned

The master plan groups the new buildings into clusters on the hill, keeping the tree cover and the ring road, and links them to the existing hospital. It includes a new hospital block, a courtyard block for clinical and teaching departments, a Skill Development Centre, a Medical Education Unit block, and high-rise residential towers for students and staff.

Built for the Kerala climate

The blocks pair exposed brick with light plastered bands and pitched, overhanging roofs that throw off the monsoon rain and shade the walls. Deep fins and glazed bays bring daylight into the wards and teaching rooms.
